Celebrating birthdays Australia-style

Two friends from work (a married couple) are recent imports from Holland. They just celebrated their birthdays, and invited us to an afternoon cookout in the park to ring in their birthdays Australia-style. That means lots of beer & wine, and cooking tons of meat on the barbie.

The day was perfect for hanging out at the park: it was cooler than it has been, and there was a nice breeze. It was a little hazy because of smoke from the fires, but nothing to complain about!
We caught a bus up to the park and found the group. It was easy to spot: lots of tall Dutch people!

In addition to the Dutch group, there were lots of the other usual expats around.

And what do European expats do when they get together? Why, play soccer, of course!

After the real game was over, there were still some people that wanted to play.

Toby told me later that it took him a little while to realize while that his youngest soccer buddy (not in this pic), spoke only Dutch. But that didn't stop them from having fun!

Here's a nice pic of Esther and Andres.

Wait, what is that behind them?? It looks like....

Yup, that is a Stormtrooper!
Turns out he was going to this little kids party right next to us. Cute!

Even though there were no Stormtroopers at our party, it was still a great afternoon of hanging out with good food and lovely people. We chatted with people about the expat life, Sydney, and the Dutch roots of Burwinkle (it comes from the Dutch words meaning a small shop, like a city convenience store).

Toby had a good time too, playing soccer and hanging out with people he's getting to know pretty well. It was all around a really great afternoon!

  1. Just so you know, that "stormtrooper" did not have movie quality armor. I had half a mind to go over and tell the kids he was a fraud, but unlike Buddy the Elf, I held my tongue. But we all know, TK 421, that you were not at your post this day. You were not at your post.
