Sweden day 5: more Copenhagen!

The only thing I had on my wish list before we left: to see the Little Mermaid statue. So we got up and headed out to see it first thing in the morning!

Then we checked out of our hotel. We still had all day in the city, so we planned to stash our bags at the train station. A minor wrinkle occurred on the bus ride to the station when our bus suddenly stopped in a narrow street. A truck ahead of us was unloading and paying no attention to the honks of all the cars and our driver shouting and waving his hands. After sitting for 5 minutes or so, we decided to go it on foot. So we got to see more of the city on foot!

But we made it to the station eventually! After stashing our bags, we headed out to the pedestrian shopping district.

The pedestrian shopping was a little touristy, but really fun for walking around!

Toby found a fabulous hat shop, where he was helped by a fabulous gentleman with a fabulous beard!

We also managed to find some good food for eating!

Eating pastries in Denmark!

Everyone but me went for hotdogs/sausages from street carts - they even had a veggie dog option for Toby! Toby and Michelle's hot dogs were in little bread cocoons: the hot dog girl squirted the chosen sauce into the bun and then jammed the hot dog down into it. Chris' hot dog was a little different: it was about two times the size of the bun. The way to eat such a thing is to dip the meat in the sauces, eat that, and then take a bite of the bun. It looked interesting but I think I will stick with my pastry!

We did a bit more walking around through the afternoon before we found a spot in the sun and decided to claim it!

Then it was time to head out to the neighborhood where we were having fancy dinner. We allowed enough time to have a beer at Mikeller, a famous microbrewery in Copenhagen. They make lots of experimental beer, so we all got to try something unusual!

While we were at Mikeller, a man came in with what looked like his four year old son and propped him up at the bar with a beer for a while. He seemed to enjoy it...?

But then it was off to our last event in Copenhagen: fancy dinner at Relae. One reason we like traveling with the Everetts is that they like to eat as much as we do. And they also like food "experiences," which is what Relae was sure to be.

And it was! The menu is set up to be either herbivore or carnivore. You simply pick which one, and the chef cooks you the courses according to what ingredients they have. Everything is a complete surprise, so you get to evaluate each dish and really think about the food more than you might normally.

My favorite thing was the dessert, simply because I had NOT expected to like it when our server described it. But it turned out to be delicious! Although I doubt I will start putting mushrooms in my desserts at home...

All the food was good though, and I really enjoyed almost all of it. It was definitely an experience, and I'm so happy we did it!

Then it was back to the train, with a mad dash at the end in Lund for our bus. No one likes to run carrying a suitcase after having four courses and matching wines. But we did it and made it! =)
